Chickens in Dallas

Chicken Permitted in the City of Dallas

In January 2010, the City of Dallas revises the Development (zoning) Code to allow back-yard chickens in residential neighborhoods inside City limits!

Residents in RL (Residential Low-Density) zoning districts are permitted to raise not more than five (5) chickens – hens only – for personal, family, or household use only, provided the area is fenced and the chicken coop is set back at least ten (10) feet from the neighboring property line;

No Roosters Allowed

If you have any questions about our new code provisions to allow chicken in the City of Dallas, or to see if you live in a neighborhood zoned appropriately for chickens, please contact: City of Dallas Community Development Department 503-831-3571
